Old School Skate Jam – From Skateboard.com 2001
For me, this last weekend was what Skate Dreams are made of. Its going to take me a week or so to process all of the input…using my best Bogie voice, ….it all started on a Friday night. Two guys skating a bowl. Lucky for me, I was one of those guys. And the other, oh, yeah, when he said, “Hi, my name’s Tom”, I already knew his last name. Inouye….

Steve Olsen (Skater of the Year ’78) and Tony Alva (Skater of the Year ’77)It was probably the greatest night ever in the history of skateboarding, and barely anyone even knew about it. It was Saturday, February the 10th, 2001 at the Skatelab Skatepark and Skateboarding Museum. Todd Huber (www.Skatelab.com) , Eric “Arab” Groff, Scott Radinsky and Brad Ellman (www.Zboys.com) somehow managed to organize the first ever skate jam dedicated to the legends of skateboarding. Skateboarders from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s all converged on the infamous Skatelab skatepark in Simi Valley, Ca to fuel the never ending fire from within. It was a red carpet event. Invite only. Legends came from all over the country. Alan “Ollie” Gelfand, Jimmy Plumer and Tom Groholski from Florida. Tom Inouye from Oregon. Glen Friedman from NYC. Duane Peters even cancelled a show with the Hunns in West Virginia to fly out for the event. Over 160 skateboarders that all offered a piece to what skateboarding is today. What happened was a load of snake sessions in the bowl, catered eats, shooting the shit with old friends, autograph signing, photo ops and beer drinking. The music was provided by Agent Orange and Powerflex 5 (Steve Alba’s band). It was chaotic and serene all at the same moment. I was so wound up that I could only do the one thing that would make me relax…ride. Ultimate thanks to Todd, Arab, Brad and Skatelab for throwing down.
Brad Ellman’s account of events leading up to the event:
I heard that Todd from Skatelab wanted to put together an event of honoring the legends in skateboarding. I’ve worked with Todd on some internet skateboard related stuff in the past so I knew he needed some help with this stuff. Generally people use their email every day so I knew that for this event to work, it needed a HEAVY, updated daily, straight to the point website for the event. After doing the z-boys.com site for a few years now, I’ve made a lot of good friends and contacts along the way. Ed Economy, (a 70’s Sims pro) and I kept asking each other when Todd was gonna commit to a date for the event. Once he committed, he put me in touch with Arab (Eric Groff) and the rest is a total blur. Daily phone calls between the 3 of us, emails to tons of people, phone calls across the country. It was absolutely insane for the 2 months leading up to the event. Slowly we were getting practically every 70’s pro, lots of 80’s pros, photographers, company owners, team managers, etc.
What blew my mind was how the hell all the people actually showed up. The guest list was 99% crossed off names. The few I got in touch with that couldn’t make it were Shogo Kubo, Wentzle Ruml, and Stacy Peralta.
Rob Mertz’s first hand account:
The first annual Old School Skate Jam was held at the Simi Valley Skatelab on Feb. 10, 2001. We were supposed to go up there with Mike McGill and Alan Gelfand but they were lagging so hard that we had to split. We arrive in Simi and decide to hit up the Taco Bell before we go to the park. Inside we see an older guy with a Dogtown sweatshirt on. I joked about how it’s Paul Constineau. I used to have his board back in the day (I still have it…). We go to the Skatelab and have to wait outside until the doors open. It’s about 5:00 and freezing out. We wait inside my truck. Again and again we see the Dogtowner walking around and keep joking about Paul Constineau…finally Mark Schmid yells out “Hey Paul!!” when he walks by again, and he says “What?”. It was him!!!! Do I know my skate history or what? Not bad for a Pennsylvania guy. We chat with him a while amongst other notables then go in once the doors open. It was a red carpet, invite only with the armed guards to prove it. The boys really put it all into this event. Once inside, there was a giant catered area and the skate museum, which Todd had redone beautifully. So many old boards……ahhhh… We meander up to the already packed bowl to witness complete anarchy. 5-6 people dropping in at once, bodies flailing, old guys that haven’t skated in 10 years mixed in with your Brian Patches and Tony Hawks, what a site. Highlights of the night would have to include, Eddie Ratigue, Dave Duncan, Duane “roll out-push people out of the way-then roll back in” Peters, Eddie Elguera, Steve “goggles” Olson, Mike Smith, Wally Inouye, and too many others to mention. Much thanks to Todd and Arab for putting on the coolest event ever. Next year make it the whole day!!! Thanks!!

Thanks for the ‘insane’ time. What a way to start off the New Year!!! I for one … along with my family … felt honored to have been a part of skateboarding history. Being out of skateboarding for over 15+ years and doing other things … I forgot where my roots were. Just this last May … I tapped into them once again. I now know what I have been missing for so long. Skateboarding is me!!! Thanks Again …
