ART, MUSIC, & SKATE PROFESSIONALS TO TEACH AND INSPIRE AT SKATE HALL OF FAME 2 DAY EVENT
SIMI VALLEY- The 2 day “SKATE & CREATE 2024” workshop-filled event will take place at The Skateboarding Hall of Fame Skateboard Museum located at 1555 Simi Town Center Way, Unit 230, Simi Valley, CA 93065 on Saturday February 3rd from noon to 9pm and from noon to 5pm on Sunday February 4th. This all ages event allows participants to sign up for a wide range of affordable classes, workshops, and contests taught and judged by professional artists, graphic designers, cartoonists, guitarists, drummers, and mentors from within the skateboard industry and community.
Class prices vary from free with paid $5 admission to $50. Most classes are in the $10 to $25 range. All proceeds go to raising money for the Skateboard Museum.
Hawk Clothing graphic artists Ryan Winn and Matt Lorentz along with Tony Hawk Pro Skater designer Raven Cruz-Fadden and Powell Peralta Experience artist Chistian Barrowclough will teach artists how to prepare a used skatedeck and create a painted work of art to be hung at the Hall of Fame. Skate decks and art supplies will be provided.
USA Olympian skateboarder Bryce Wettstein of Stereo Skateboards and Logan Earth Ski phenom Kelley Apanowicz will skate the mini halfpipe area alongside kids of all ages and mentor them on their skill levels. “I’m excited to spark passion in new skaters and share the world of skateboarding”, says 10 year old Apanowicz. A fun hour long skate contest will take place shortly afterwards with students earning prizes for Most Improved Skater, Skater with the Biggest Smile and Stoke, etc. Judged by Kelley Apanowicz and San Diego Padres ambassador Padre Libre.
Skateboard Hall of Fame premiere portrait artist Peter Whitley will host multiple drop in quick sketch sessions from noon to 4pm. Join him in several art jams focusing on observation, figures in action, environment, and composition in pencil. These sessions are all free with your $5 admission fee. Materials will be provided and sketchbooks will be for sale. Students are encouraged to bring their portfolios for review as well.
Skateboard Hall of Famer and longtime seasoned musician Steve Steadham of Citizen X will teach a drum class and a guitar class with Chris Armes lead guitarist for the band Agent 51. Drum class limited to 4 students. Guitar class limited to 6 students.
Bonsai Design class with Bonsai Master Jordan Farar (limited to 8 students, 18 years and up). A 2 hour class with Jordan teaching the art of bonsai (trim, shape, transfer bonsai into a pot). 11am to 1pm
Singer, songwriter and uke player Bryce Wettstein will lead a 45 minute musical class How To Write A Song as she collaborates with an entire class from concepts to final live performance. Wettstein says, “I can’t wait for this opportunity to help inspire others and create alongside them at The Hall of Fame. I’m so happy to inspire kids of all ages because its like a train that keeps running when one person inspires another. Inspiration is always running, especially when it is sparked!”
Skate photographer and former pro skater Freddie DeSota will teach alongside fellow photographers at the indoor halfpipe while professional and amateur skateboarders display a variety of tricks. Featured skaters to include Tibs Parise, Bryce Wettstein, Kelley Apanowicz. “I’m excited to share from a skateboarders perspective how to capture a good skate photo. We will explore composition, timing, flash, and positioning”, states photographer Freddie DeSota.
Pump track world record holder (602 consecutive laps) skateboarder and DJ, Blake Sterger will teach the Art of DJ-ing as students join him behind the turntables.
Steve Steadham’s band Citizen X will make a tour stop at the Hall of Fame and will play a free show from 4pm to 5:30pm on Saturday February 3rd.
The Opening Night Receptions for both the new art installation Johnny Rad’s Blue Tile Lounge 2024 and The Portraits of The Bones Brigade Experience by Ben Jay will be from 7pm to 9pm and is free with $5 admission. Pieces from both artshows were first seen at the sold out Bones Brigade Experience at Vans in 2023 and will include new art as well.
Sunday will bring DC Comics Batman artist Danny Miki, comicbook artist ZanderComix6 and cartoonist Matt Lorentz as they teach Beneath The Mask a 2 hour comic class focusing on expressions, hero and villain character design, and storytelling through sequential art. Students are encouraged to bring their portfolios for review as well.
Skateboarder Kelley Apanowicz will host an hour long skate jam session starting at noon on Sunday and a skate contest (with prizes) at 1pm.
Cartoonist Matt Lorentz will help students create colorful Valentines Day greeting cards with free stickers to include inside the envelopes.
The Official Skateboarding Hall of Fame includes a 10,000 square foot Skateboard Museum featuring a gift shop, pro shop, and indoor skatepark and is a non profit organization.
