Skateboarding Hall of Fame Update
SHoF’s Board of Directors Autumnal Meeting
Simi Valley, CA (October, 2024) – Skateboarding Hall of Fame’s (SHoF) founder and Executive Director, Todd Huber, organized last week’s meeting of the non-profit’s ever coalescing Board of Directors (BoD).
Huber explained, “The meeting allowed the board to discuss current projects that are ongoing, as well as looking to next year’s events, too. It’s been a busy year so far, what with the 2024 SHoF double-year induction ceremony, plus the Rolling From the 60s Into the 70s Silver Skater event in Oceanside, CA, and the London Calling video premiere with its historic display of early skateboarding in England, and the recent Skate and Create II art show, it’s been a busy couple of months!”
SHoF Board of Director members able to participate in the meeting included Louise Balma, Don Brown, Laura Thornhill Caswell, and Jack Smith, as well as BoD Chair, Jim Fitzpatrick. Unable to participate in last week’s meeting was another board member, Brian Logan—Brian is joining the group, which has collectively more than 250 years of combined skateboarding experiences and perspective.
During the meeting Huber also referred to ongoing SHoF programs that include Skateboarding Camps and Skateboarding School instructions taking place inside SHoF’s facility, “Over the past 25 years I’d say we’ve taught more than 1000 kids how to skateboard. Their passion is the thing that’s so rewarding.” Additionally, Huber provided information about SHoF’s “Sk8tibles”—collectible trading cards available at the SHoF museum or online through the SHoF website (skateboardinghalloffame.org). “The cards are really cool,” explains Huber, “there are profiles of individual SHoF members, each card provides information and a cool photo, too.”
SHoF’s Board of Directors anticipate working closely with SHoF’s Advisory Board—including Lance Mountain, Jim Muir, Steve Olson, Glen E. Friedman, and John Lucero. In fact, planning for the 2025 SHoF Induction Ceremony has already begun as potential inductees are considered based upon their contributions to skateboarding’s history and culture.
Other events being coordinated for 2025 include those intended as fundraising opportunities, as Huber explained to the board, “It’s important to remind everyone of the importance of fundraising for the museum, it’s ongoing! As a 501c3 all donations are tax-deductible. In the past the advisory board and other volunteers have helped create opportunities and they’ve participated in events, too. Like the Rolling from the 60s into the 70s event. That was a co-lab with the CA Surf Museum in Oceanside. 60s era surfing skateboarders like, Herbie Fletcher, Tom Craig, Frank Nasworthy, Michael Mel, Larry Stevenson and Dean Torrence were presented with Silver Skater awards in recognition of their contributions to skateboarding and surfing. It was cool for those able to attend, including SHoF inductees John Freis, Tony Alva, and Steve Cathey. Those gathered at the museum were able to bid on collectibles and memorabilia donated for the event, which raised money for both museums.”
Huber added, “In addition to the 2025 SHoF Induction Ceremony, we’re planning additional events in the SHoF Museum’s location in Simi Valley that will include video premieres, panel discussions, and art shows—all on the calendar to close out 2024 and into 2025. Oh, look for information about “Lunch With the Ladies” scheduled to take place in early 2025—attendees will enjoy a catered lunch with many of SHoF’s lady inductees who will discuss their skateboarding experiences.”
SHoF Board Chair Fitzpatrick is developing SHoF’s first Annual Giving Campaign, as he explained, “Annual Giving Campaigns provide the opportunity for end-of-the -year tax deductible donations from individuals as well as corporations and businesses—the entire skateboard community can participate in this first campaign.” Fitzpatrick added, “All the information and necessary tax forms will be available for everyone once the campaign is launched!”
