Lunch with the Ladies!

March 15th, we kicked open the doors for a special fund raising event and celebration of all the wonderful ladies that have been inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, and even some who aren’t. Close to 100 people showed up to join in the fun and helped raise over $3,000 for the SHoF & Museum.

Arrivals began before the slated 12 o’clock official time and the crowd quickly grew. There weren’t any set in stone plans except that lunch was going to be ready soon. Once lunch was partaken, Todd Huber, the Museums founder and curator, got up on the mic to say a few words, which grew into a lot of love and praise for the Ladies and all the cool things they have accomplished. Another thing he did was put a spotlight on a lot of people who help the SHoF and also stories about how Todd met some of the inductees and have since interacted. Some laughs and good stories were shared.

He passed the mic, the Brian Logan, who told everyone about the next Silver Skater Awards at the Surf Museum coming up later this year. Off the cuff, like Todd, so we all learned more about the Surf Museum and some of their programs.

After that the Ladies were asked to sit up in front of everyone in attendance and tell a little about themselves. This is where things got very serious (~sarcasm~) and educational. There were some nerves as they hadn’t planned any of this, but the ladies came through and once the first couple of ladies let out a few tales, most the remaining ladies were eager to share some stories. For instance, Sally Anne Miller shared her story about helping Irvine get the first CA public skatepark built and how the non locals came in quick to make the neighbors pissed… and in her next breath the story about how she was asked to develop a plan for the ASA, then they insisted on hiring her to run it. She’d never even skateboarded but she truly affected the skateboarding world in the 1970’s and beyond.

It was really a fantastic afternoon, about 4 hours some serious Girl Power was felt by all who attended.
